Everyday people see women sexualized and misrepresented through various screens (TVs, Computers, movies). Luckily, there are a handful of well-known women who combat these ideals with their lives. The underrepresented group today is the LGBTQQ(etc) community. Without getting too deep into each sector of the spectrum, here’s a preview of the deceptive light media has shed on our community.
As a lesbian, I already have enough issues with my gender determining what I can and cannot do with my life - whether it’s my career, clothes or choice of words. Add in my unconventional sexuality and it’s a disaster more often than not. Great example, my fiancé and I go to a party with 98 % heteronormative folks, plus tons of food and alcohol. Then, the men trying to take my partner to bed were politely rejected and told “I have a girlfriend”. Unfortunately, they only saw this as an opportunity for a threesome. My fiancé told me she was uncomfortable. I, on the other hand, felt a strong urge to throw up.
It’s not completely their fault that they think women aren’t completely gay. Porn loves to show how guys can change a lesbian’s mind with his amazing(?) penis. A few of the LGBT shows I’ve found tend to feature a lesbian couple who desires sex with a man. Maybe this is the only way their shows could be approved, but you can’t believe everything you see on tv. (message from captain obvious)
When it comes to gay men, they tend not to be “turned out” by women – leave comments as to why that is. This doesn’t leave them out of media’s perverse grasp. Through the aforementioned screens, gay men drink until they blackout and snort anything given until they pass out. This isn’t fair to the real gay men, who want to start a family or pursue a career with no distractions.
The transgender poster child right now is Laverne Cox. Unfortunately, the celebrity lifestyle doesn’t give a true view of all the transsexual children, who’ve been abandoned for their identity. Even grown up transgender folk, who have issues getting their medical expenses covered, are left unheard. Hopefully Ms. Cox will be the gateway to letting America (and the world) understand the reality of transsexuals isn’t as beautiful as her life appears to be.
*great job depicting it through her character’s story on Orange in the New Black*
Media is beginning to familiarize itself with reality rather than reality tv. As few examples are Modern family, The New Normal. The L Word, and hopefully more to come. *crossing my fingers for a few LGBT Disney main character* Regardless, it’s important to inform the clueless of the real LGBT community, the good, the bad or the ugly.
