In America there are words to describe underrepresented groups and some are politically correct while others are highly controversial. The problem may be that it is derogatory in nature, misused in certain seeing if the word may misconstrue its true meaning. If you are part of America’s underrepresented groups, you may deal with this “confusion” <if we give all who say these words the benefit of the doubt> more than needed.
I can try to give a general idea of how these words affect the user as well as the person(s) being discussed. Let's say we're downtown one night she the streets are filed with college students Heckler: hey <insert offensive words>! Target: what’d you said? Heckler (louder): hey <insert offensive words>! Now, the target could confront the Heckler verbally, physically or ignore the incident all together. Which is the best option? |
For starters, violence is never the answer, so look toward the other options:
1. Verbal responding
If the target responds without slandering the heckler and their entire family – personally I wouldn’t see a problem with it. Especially, if they give an eloquent or even profound response. But if it’s late and you’re “tired” maybe you should consider option 2.
2. Walking away
This leaves the heckler with little to say as well. I guess they may go after the next person who’s different, looking for some type of fight.

Overall, I don't believe in letting one word (or phrase) throw me off. if I allow one thing to turn me into a monster, I’ve lost my cool and gone out of my character. When the heckler finds that one this to make me jump, they've liable to use it again (on me or another). I refuse to let anyone make mw act a fool on any occasion. If I’m too tired or whatever the case may be I'll let that heckler say what they want - alone. If I’ve had it, I’ll make sure they know they are disrespectful and there's nothing appealing or attractive about their word choice. Without this restraint, it’s like I've been hypnotized and my hypnotist says "whenever someone says <trigger word>, you’ll act like you’re on fire."
